Server roll-call

  • Yes: Nick, RichG, Toby, RichL, Jez, Steve, Martin, Scott, Matt
  • Willing to pay £20: Sian, Fiona
  • No: None
  • Not yet responded: Craig

[1] It has the equivalent of a P4-1.6Ghz processor, 256Mb of RAM, 20Gb of hard disk, and can to 10Mbps transfers of up to 40Gb a month. This is quite a lot more server than we previously decided upon because Memset's prices have fallen in the mean time, and it's a lot more than arawn offers.

The "Willing to pay £20" category has been suggested by Nick for Sian and possibly Fiona and Criag, as they only use the email and nothing else. I have to point out the bulk of the hosting cost and general site expense in terms of the site is the web stuff, not the email -- in particular the gallery, which chews up quite a lot of disk space. So I think a reduced cost "email only" category is not unfair. I'd like to see what everyone else thinks on this.

Re: Server roll-call

Um . . . I didn't sy no.

I said that it was alot for what I use it for and that paying the 35 quid in December would be tight.

Re: Server roll-call

Yeah, I forgot to update it following out subsequent discussion. Also, I'm pretty sure we're come in below £30 each.

Re: Server roll-call

Rich,
Can you kindly explain in simple layman terms why this is so expensive to everybody if I'm paying for half of the server cost?

Server cost = £246 plus change (incl VAT), so if I give you £150 for the server (eventually - I'll pay all of it initially to save the hassle of collecting from the tight geezers).

So, in blond terms just for you, everybody else will need to make a contribution to the remainder of the server costs (plus all the domain name shenanigans), which by my complex calculations works out at £316 - £150 = £166.

Squabble over that, but it should be less than £37 @ pa (Closer to £16 @ if you split it equally). So may I suggest a tenner each for the emailers and the remainder of £126 divided between the rest of you 'core' members which should work out at £15.75 @

Re: Server roll-call

Two reasons. Firstly, Richard Little paid out £60 last month to renew eggwan.com for five years, and will have to pay another £10 to renew eggwan.co.uk in January.

Secondly, you have the server cost wrong; it's a Miniserver 8000, which is £34.95 a month plus VAT. I'll ring you in a bit; I need to chat to you about this.

Re: Server roll-call

Becasue the server cost has already been discounted for your contribution.

"Squabble over that . . . . . . . ." ?

Sarcastic wanker.

Re: Server roll-call

Sarcastic wanker is a birthright of being welsh. Also, this sarcastic wanker has already paid for the server, which gives me some privileges to be both sarcastic and a lover of hand shandy's ;-p
