Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

I have all the bits to do this now. Tomorrow (Sat) am would be cool for me. Anyone fany playing some about, ooh, 10? Might be a good idea to try and get a laptop or something next to your Xbox so we can IM alongside the game -- it'll be easier for co-ordinating games and suchlike.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

Pencil me in.

I'll just have to check what I'm supposed to be doing when I get home.

I would suggest a test using PGR2 as we both have that?

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

Ok, I have installed X-Link Messenger on Stokesey's laptop.

My / our handle is myfinger.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

See now this is silly.

You already have a box that connects to multiplayer gaming etc. Why do you need two or to use the inferior of the two platforms?

Bah.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

Cancel that - not sure that I can get my install to work properly I'll give it a try on Saturday morning anayway - I don;t hold out much hope though.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

Your Xbox's dont have Deus Ex2.

What happened here?

You exist with the sole purpose to "piss about" It's your bhag!

Your opinions are totally founded. The hours I have spent getting this thing how I like it and getting a 20000+ 3d mark outta it, could have been spent doing something like... Working. Ah. Now you should see my point.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

Because our PCs don't have Project Gotham Racing 2?

Because (in two out of three cases) our PCs are busy running Linux?

Because upgrading our PCs to run, say, Half Life 2 will cost twice as much as an entire Xbox? And make them sound like windtunnels?

Because our PCs aren't plugged in to a 28" widescreen telly and a home cinema grade 5.1 setup?

Because my office chair is only 1/4th as comfortable as my sofa?

Because when we get this working, we'll have voice support in most of the games, allowing us to talk to each other over a microphone?

Because Xbox games Just Work? No drivers, no patches, no performance problems, no choosing between 1024x768 without anti-aliasing or 800x600 with. No reboots. No crashes. No BIOS updates. No being booted off when whoever is playing as the server has to disconnect to wind off an optimistic overclock because his CPU hit 75 degrees celsius. No getting halfway through a game and realising that 1280x960 might have looked fine for the first five minutes, but now there's fifteen players on screen it's turned into a slideshow. No patch hunt, when everyone discovers they have differing and incompatible versions. No losing a kill because your IM program stole the focus and minimised your game window. No waiting for some obscure 10Mb map to download from the server at a strictly throttled 2kb/s whilst everyone else plays on.

Because Xbox means no pissing about.

I think PC gaming has jumped the shark.

Go into Game. Notice that brand new PC games are £35 and after about a month they are £25. Notice that Xbox and PS2 games are £45 for at least a year after release. Go here and notice that, of $11.2million total video games sales in 2003, PC games were only $1.2million. I am not alone in my opinions.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

Try not installing the "vital" EXE update. That doesn't work for me, whereas the older version does.

My tag is 'glyndwr', predictably.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

I think Rich and Martin deserve their own 'classic battles' page on Eggwan... reserved especially for classic engagements such as this Xbox v. PC gaming debate.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

No No No,

Ill stop using it before that happpens

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

Erm, my XBox does have Deus Ex 2. Don't know what it's like, I haven't loaded it yet.

And yes, I like pissing about when I'm in the mood for pissing about -- not ten minutes after a game starts up, or indeed when I have to write an article about Linux software RAID with a deadline looming. All things in there place.

But really, it's the money. I'm bored of shelling out £150 on a graphics card every twelve months, only to never get around playing any games on it anyway. Over the last year, for every minute I've spent playing games on my PC, I've probably spent five on the Xbox -- and twenty on my GBA SP. Linux is a big thing. Having to reboot to play games kills the spontaneity, and means I just never bother.

YMMV, naturally.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

Hey, this one is very civilised.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

That's only because you have so far singularly failed to mention his gay eyelashes and his dubious taste in sectionable females

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

There is also the totally alien concept that you bunch of pikey toerags buy legitimate 'boxes with live services rather than spend weeks of your lives trying to get flakey networks running on a plug and play system. There aren't that many 'must have' live titles to make it that expensive. I own two x-boxes most of you could.

As Rich not half an hour ago said; 'What's the monetary value to attach to your time?'

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

i resent that deeply Mr Dave.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

Not a lot.

I think my main reason for not getting Xbox gaming is that if I started, I would spend TOO much time on the infernal machine.

Re: XBox Head to Head, Any Takers?

No you don't, you love me really. Do you want a glass of absinthe and a loan of my lash curlers?
